The Gospel According to Peanuts was a bestseller when it was published in 1965. Robert L. Short, the book’s author, was a Presbyterian minister who was acquainted with Schultz. In an interview with Studs Terkel, Short said
Schulz has gone on record as saying that he
always attempts to put his faith in his work,
otherwise he knows his work wouldn't
really be worth doing or at all satisfying to him.
But at the same time he knows this has to be
done in a very subtle way.
In his text, Short includes selections from Schultz’s cartoons and “interprets their prophetic meaning from a Christian perspective.”
